Julian, Looking at the headers from your message, northwestern.edu is using Microsoft hosted Exchange for their email. This particular outage that is going on right now appears to have a huge negative impact on Microsoft infrastructure. Therefore it would not be out of the question that this would cause delays in email passing through Microsoft's hosted exchange infrastructure. Just as an example today, the first message from Nick that was sent at 11:27am Central did not hit our email servers until 12:53pm Central. Rob’s reply that was sent at 12:35pm did not get here until 1:29pm.
