Outage Start: December 28, 2015 16:49 GMT Outage Stop: December 29, 2015 9:12 GMT Root Cause: A fiber cut impacted unprotected transport services in Atlanta, GA. Fix Action: The damaged fiber was repaired, thus restoring service to a stable state. Summary: The Transport NOC reported a suspected fiber cut in Atlanta, GA that was impacting unprotected services. Field Services were engaged to investigate further, and upon arrival at the site, began shooting the fiber to isolate the location of the suspected fiber cut. Field services isolated the location of the point of failure to 10 miles from the testing site. The Outside Plant team was dispatched, and it was confirmed that a fiber cut between Atlanta, GA and Waco, GA was the source of the outage. Splice Crews arrived at the site and began excavation activities to further isolate the damaged fiber. Spare fiber was dispatched to the site, and the Splice Crew began pulling the fiber through the duct to bypass the damaged portion of the fiber. Field Services confirmed that there were three damaged cables, including a 120 count, 96 count and 24 count cable, efforts to pull the fiber through the duct to bypass the damaged portion of the fiber continued. Splicing on the 120 count and 96 count cable was completed, and Field Services experienced issues when trying to pull the third cable through the duct. The duct was altered in order to pull the third cable, after which splicing on the third cable was completed. Services are confirmed to be up and stable at this time. If additional issues are experienced, please contact the Level 3 Technical Service Center at 1-877-4LEVEL3.
