
BES emails still go through the RIM NOC I believe. We've had outages that have affected my people before. From what I gather, BES uses Exchange for it's email start to finish - you use your mobile provider's data network to go from your Blackberry phone to your own servers.
BIS connects to servers housed by Blackberry.
