I have several customers with voice services down due to this outage. A question people are asking is what should have been done to prevent it? Alas, virtually nothing can be done to increase physical protection, because fiber conduits are typically run in parallel with power at exposed locations such as bridges and underpasses — favorite attack surfaces for copper thieves. The carriers have no control over physical security at these locations, which are typically left vulnerable by State actors. The only prevention is carrier routing over diverse facilities, which seems to be missing in much of the LEC/CLEC network today. If you were affected by this outage, I urge you to file a request for an RFO with Frontier customer service, and then follow up with asking them how they will be engineering diverse routing to prevent another outage should the same cut occur. I have had customers victimized by five similar outages in the last six months, and have personally visited two scenes of the crime. Customer resistance is the only way we can get carriers to be held accountable. I canceled all my Lumen contracts last year due to repeated failures like this one. -mel ________________________________ From: William Kern via Outages <outages@outages.org> Sent: Tuesday, May 12, 2026 9:25 AM To: outages@outages.org <outages@outages.org> Cc: William Kern <wkern@pixelgate.net> Subject: [Outages] Re: Frontier issue southern cal and this morning. Hello Customers
Because of the safety of the field techs in this particular area, the crew is being called off and will resume in the AM.
Per construction manager: This is one of the areas on the list that is completely unsafe in the dark after hours.
Tier 2/NOC is looking for reroutes for some of the circuits. More updates shortly.

I have 3 EVPL circuits with them in LA that are similarly down. Nobody can tell us what's going on because they're stuck with their systems integrating in Verizon.

After an hour on the hold and never hearing back from about the WebTicket I had created on their support portal.
I was able to get a rep to confirm a general issue "in the region". She mumbled about getting lots of calls, so I'm not sure of the blast radius.
We are in Thousand Oaks.
I hope this isn't another one of those "idiots can't tell the difference between fiber and copper" cuts.
